The “organic” seal you may have grown accustomed to seeing on foods in the supermarket may be beginning to show up on your favorite beers and wines, as well. According to the most recent data available from the Organic Trade Association, organic wine sales have risen 28 percent and organic beer 40 percent in recent years. In order to carry the “organic” stamp, wine or beer must contain 95 percent organic ingredients and be untreated by artificial pesticides or fertilizers. The term “made with organically grown grapes” may also appear on wine labels. This means that the grapes are organic and sulfites were added during the wine-making process to help protect and preserve the wine. Such wines cannot be labeled “organic.”
